A million lives go down in a day
Beneath this rising and setting star
And as many more are on their way
The fateful hour is never far

Think not that your life shall end
Nor by what course you might extend
The length of days you have to spend
Shry penury shall do you in
The day is short and quite unjust
Try as you might you cannot win
This game is rigged, in me your trust
Do place, and faith! Dear friend, perpend:
I am an open book to you
I cannot lie and wish I could
This fragile store somehow renew
Or rest because you understood
