Cover your heaven, Zeus,
With cloudy vapors
and try out your strength
like a boy beheading thistles
on oaks and mountaintops
Still you must let
My earth stand
And my cottage, which you did not build,
And my hearth
Whose glow
You envy me.
I know of nothing more despicable
Under the sun than you gods!
Scantily you feed
Your majesty
On sacrifice
And the breath of prayer
And you would starve
If children and beggars,
Were not hopeful fools.
Once in my youth
I knew not where to turn,
and cast my confused eye
toward the heavens, as if there were an ear above it
to hear my lament,
Or a heart like mine
To take pity on me in my hour of need.
Who helped me
Against the arrogant Titans?
Who saved me from death,
And slavery?
Oh, holy glowing heart,
Did you not achieve all this yourself?
and in your innocence
Deceived, but radiate thankfulness
To the sleeper up above?
I worship you? what for?
.
.
.
.
was it not omnipotent time
and eternal fate
my masters and yours
that forged me into a man?
did you think
that i would hate life
or flee into the wilderness
because all my flowery dreams
did not mature?
I sit here
and make men in my own image
a race which shall be like me
to suffer, to weep
to enjoy, and be glad
and to ignore you
as I do!
